Wanaka is a small
town nestled on the shores of Lake Wanaka, and surrounded by the peaks
of the World Heritage listed Mount Aspiring
National Park.
The rugged and isolated beauty of this park offers some of the
most spectacular easily accessible mountain walking within only tens
of
minutes from Wanaka – huge
braided river systems, steep sided alpine valleys, snow clad mountains
and glaciers abound.
Winter sports are
available at the Treble Cone (rated by snow boarders as one of the
mountains in the world) and the Cardrona ski-fields,
both of which are within 30 – 40 minutes drive of Wanaka. For the more
adventurous, heli-skiing is widely available. From Treble Cone, skiing
or boarding with views over the lake with a backdrop of snow capped mountains
including Mount Aspiring is a sight you’ll never forget.
In summer, being on and around the lake or walking in the high pastures
and mountains is a must. Other activities available in and around Wanaka
include horse riding, boating, fishing, golf, parachuting, parasailing,
climbing and a plethora of scenic flight options over the local alpine
scenery such as Mount Aspiring, nearby (by air!) Milford Sound and
the dramatic Fiordland of the west coast.
Wanaka is just a short ~1
hour drive north of the hustle and bustle of Queenstown. There are
direct international flights into Queenstown
from
Melbourne and Sydney. Access from Perth is by way of convenient night
flights direct to Auckland with frequent connections direct to Queenstown – leave
Perth early evening and be in Wanaka for lunch the following day!
